Ibtisam Hussein - hanged twice! At dawn on Monday the 1st of March 2004, 24-year-old Ibtisam Hussein was hanged for drowning two young children, Fatmeh, age 5, and Ahmad, aged 6, in the Jordan Valley canal in January 2002. The execution took place in Swaqa Penitentiary, 100km south of the Jordanian capital, Amman, where all Jordanian hangings are carried out. She was originally convicted of manslaughter in both deaths. The Court of Cassation (approximates to the Supreme Court) reviewed the case for almost three months, before overturning the Criminal Court verdict and returning the case to lower the court demanding the death penalty.
