Ibtisam Hussein - hanged twice!
At dawn on Monday the 1st of March 2004, 24-year-old Ibtisam Hussein was hanged for drowning two young children, Fatmeh, age 5, and Ahmad, aged 6, in the Jordan Valley canal in January 2002.

The crime was apparently as an act of revenge, against her fiancé’s family who opposed her marriage plans. The execution took place in Swaqa Penitentiary, 100km south of the Jordanian capital, Amman, where all Jordanian hangings are carried out.
She was originally convicted of manslaughter in both deaths. The Court of Cassation (approximates to the Supreme Court) reviewed the case for almost three months, before overturning the Criminal Court verdict and returning the case to lower the court demanding the death penalty. In July 2003, the Criminal Court sentenced Ibtisam to death, having upgraded the conviction to premeditated murder.
Court papers showed that a few months prior to the murders the defendant met a man who promised to marry her, but his father refused permission and insisted he marry another woman instead. When the defendant heard the news, she lured the man's siblings with sweets and chocolates, brought them to the canal and pushed them into the water one after the other, court transcripts said. When the children began screaming for help, the woman fled the scene so no one would see her, the court added.

She was the only person hanged in Jordan in 2004. The rope broke on the first attempt and Ibtisam fell to the ground, but did not break any bones, said one of the officials who attended the execution. She was frightened and in pain, but was not given any sedatives, he said, on condition of anonymity.
The rope was changed and she was hanged an hour later, after a delay as prison officers tried to calm her down.
