Gladys Boomer celebrated her 100 year birthday in January. Gladys Graft was born in Columbus, Montana on January 15, 1924. She was the youngest of seven children. After graduating from High School in 1942 she moved to Long Beach, California and worked for McDonnell Aircraft. She joined the Navy in January 1944, at the age of 20. After boot camp she was stationed at the Navy Hospital in San Diego. In April of 1944 she passed her second class test and was promoted. She was promoted again In October of 1944 when she passed her first class test. In December of 1944 she was asked to extend her term of duty and was promoted to Navy Chief. She was the first women to eat at the Chiefs Mess Hall. She actually was denied lunch at the regular mess hall because she was now a Chief. As a Navy Chief Pharmacy Officer she served as the secretary for the head of the Naval Hospital. In June of 1945 she moved to San Francisco and graduated from Luxe Woman’s College on the VA bill.
