William J. Grabiarz of Buffalo, New York, a Private First Class in the U.S. Army, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions on February 23, 1945 while serving in Troop E, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division in the Philippines. On February 23, 1945, in Manila, Grabiarz voluntarily braved enemy fire in order to rescue a wounded officer who lay in an exposed position.
