This photograph is an autochrome (original colour photograph) from French banker and philanthropist Albert Kahn's collection, and was taken by one of four photographers he hired to photograph Paris: Leon Gimpel, Stephane Passet, Georges Chevalier or Auguste Leon.

It shows a French veteran from the Crimean War of 1853 - 1856, standing besides a cannon at the Hôtel des Invalides in Paris in 1911.
